We are a small team of qualified painters working across a variety of projects from beachfront and coastal properties to residential repaints and architectural new builds to commercial and retail spaces.

We’re known for being organised, thoughtful and detail driven. We have a strong commitment to delivering a quality final finish product. We value our environment, and are proud to offer non-toxic paint options, in part of our effort to offer healthier, more sustainable options for our clients.

Our responsibility as painters is to help your property withstand the elements, especially in our harsh coastal conditions. We achieve this through our diligent preparation processes, bringing consideration and integrity to our processes and choice in materials.

Building trust and strong working relationships with our clients is an essential part of our process. Understanding our client’s objectives and vision for their space allows us to deliver precise and thoughtful outcomes. We love the connection with the people we’re working for and seeing their vision come to life.

We service Matakana, Omaha, Warkworth and the wider Rodney region.

More on our practices

  • Conventional paints and oils, along with many other materials used in the trades, contain thousands of harmful chemicals.

We value our environment and our health, which is why we specialise in natural paints and finishes. The products we use are made from renewable, plant-based ingredients and are formulated to be ultra-low in VOCs, non-toxic, and safe for homes, children, pets, and the people applying them.

Natural paints today are incredibly durable. They’re engineered to match, and in many cases outperform, the longevity and resilience of conventional paints. Our suppliers use advanced formulations that combine natural binders, minerals, and oils to create tough, breathable coatings designed to stand up to New Zealand’s climate.

If you’re interested in learning more about why we choose natural materials, you can read more here.

  • Our focus on natural paints means we avoid products with high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs are chemicals that evaporate into the air as paint dries. In conventional paints, these compounds can include solvents and additives that contribute to strong odours and reduced indoor air quality. Depending on the level of exposure, they can cause irritation, headaches, or longer-term respiratory concerns - particularly in enclosed or recently painted spaces.

By choosing natural, low-VOC and VOC-free products, we reduce the amount of chemical off-gassing that occurs during and after a project. This aligns with our broader approach to creating healthier indoor environments, especially for clients who are sensitive to chemicals, have young children, or simply want to understand what is being applied to the surfaces they live with every day.

We aim to be transparent about the materials we use and why we use them. If you’re interested in more detail about the products we work with or how they perform, you can read more here.

  • Quality in painting practice begins long before any paint reaches the surface. We prioritise thorough preparation because the long-term performance of any paint system depends on the condition of the substrate and how it is treated. This means carefully cleaning, sanding, repairing, and priming surfaces to ensure the coating adheres correctly and performs as intended.

We take the time to address potential issues before painting rather than rushing through prep, because most paint failures originate at this stage. By being methodical and consistent, we reduce the risk of peeling, cracking, or uneven finishes and create a coating system that is durable and reliable.

During application, we follow manufacturer guidelines for coverage, drying times, and environmental conditions, and maintain a clean, controlled work environment to ensure a smooth, consistent finish. After completion, we schedule follow-ups to monitor the performance of the paint and catch any early signs of wear, helping clients maintain the longevity of their investment.

  • We use carefully selected, high-quality materials to ensure both the durability and performance of every project. The paints, primers, oils, and finishes we choose are suited to the specific surfaces and environmental conditions of each job, helping coatings perform optimally over time.

Our approach to materials goes hand-in-hand with our preparation and application methods. Using the right product is only part of the process - how it is applied, under the correct conditions, and in combination with proper substrate preparation, determines its long-term effectiveness. By being deliberate and precise in our material choices, we aim to achieve finishes that are not only visually consistent but also resilient.

  • Being based on the coast, we are particularly mindful of the connection between our work, local waterways, and the ocean.

Paint and other materials from conventional painting can have a significant impact on waterways if not managed carefully. Even small amounts of paint washed into stormwater or drains can introduce harmful chemicals, heavy metals, and solvents that affect aquatic life and ecosystems. We take responsibility for how water is used and disposed of during our work.

We separate paint solids from our wastewater and ensure any water from cleaning or rinsing is treated responsibly before being released. When we work with natural products, we can even compost leftover material, keeping it out of the environment entirely.

  • We are committed to reducing waste wherever possible in our painting practice. This starts with investing in high-quality tools and equipment that are designed to last, reducing the need for frequent replacements and the associated environmental impact. Proper care and maintenance of brushes, rollers, sprayers, and other equipment also helps extend their lifespan, meaning fewer items end up in landfill.

While some single-use items are unavoidable in our trade, we make a conscious effort to minimise their use and manage them responsibly. Leftover paint, packaging, and other materials are sorted, recycled, or repurposed wherever possible.

Beyond equipment and materials, we approach each project with efficiency in mind - careful planning helps prevent overuse of paint or consumables.

  • We prioritise transparency in every stage of a project, ensuring clients are informed and involved in key decisions. We provide detailed, itemised quotes that clearly outline costs, timelines, and the scope of work, with no hidden fees or surprises. Throughout the project, we maintain open communication, keeping you updated on progress, any changes, and potential challenges.

After completion, we schedule follow-ups to review the work and provide guidance on maintenance, ensuring you know what to expect and how to care for your new finishes.

 Our story

Sam grew up in Avalon on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, working on prestigious waterfront homes and high-end residential builds. He completed his trade qualification there, learning the level of preparation and finish required in premium real estate. He later became green accredited, building knowledge around non-toxic systems and environmentally responsible product choices. Growing up surfing and living by the ocean shaped his respect for the environment and the way he approaches his work.

Bianca trained in Fine Arts at Elam School of Fine Arts, graduating with Honours. She grew up around construction - her family runs a multi generational construction company in central Auckland - and much of her childhood was spent on renovation sites. She first learned to paint while working in the family business. Her background brings a strong understanding of colour, detail and how a home comes together as a whole.

We met through a shared passion for gardening and connecting with nature. The Matakana Coast inspires us every day -  and we feel strong environmental  responsibility to operate as sustainably as possible. We opt for sustainable, locally made products, use non-toxic options wherever possible, reduce waste and single use products and process our waste water.

We are passionate about raising the standard in the painting and decorating industry, and built our business together with the intention to offer better choices in the trades industry.

Better House Painters is a small, hands-on team. We care about the work we do, the people we work with, and the homes we’re trusted to paint.
